Altenburg in Bamberg

One of the most beautiful ambiences in Bamberg. You should definitely combine a tour of the castle with a visit to the rustic castle restaurant. Chef Oliver Lippel offers excellent food, in Corona times it is also possible to order with delivery or pick-up (note times, see website)

Actually, I would only give one star for the food because it is ready-made schnitzel, but the staff are very nice. The schnitzel is very dry and tastes like breading. The fries are also very dry. The price is ok for that. The castle is super beautiful. However, the restaurant and not the castle is rated here.

I would say one of the top 3 landmarks in Bamberg. Wonderful view over Bamberg and a cozy stop at the weekend. Definitely worth a visit as a tourist and always worth a trip for those who live in the region.

Highly recommendable ... even now in the Corona time you can eat relaxed and comfortably in the outdoor area. You are assigned tables with numbers and you have to show them when you order, which is possible without any problems. After dinner, you can also take a walk in or around the castle. An educational trail is also near the castle which is easy to walk on. A highly recommended vantage point for die-hard but also tourists

An excursion is definitely worth it. Great view. Historic ambience. Unfortunately, the beer garden was closed during our visit.

Very nice beer garden. The castle is in very good condition and there are many seating areas to enjoy your beer here. The view is also very nice. When we were there on a Saturday, there was even live music and the atmosphere among the visitors was very pleasant. It was fun to drink your beer here and you could fully enjoy it. The prices were perfectly okay too.

Easy to hike from the city, even with a stroller. Wonderful views of the city and the surrounding area. An excursion is definitely worth it. The castle itself is nice, but can't be visited from the inside, at least we didn't see it. Up in the beer garden there was very delicious homemade lemonade. Highly recommended after the climb!

Nice beer garden in the historical ambience in the courtyard near Bamberg with its own parking lot next to the castle. Great view from the castle across the surrounding area. Good beer and food, fresh bread. Well worth the trip.

Beer garden is nice, beer is good. Service staff very friendly. The way up on foot is sometimes very strenuous at appropriate temperatures but you will be rewarded with a cool blonde.

For some reason, Google only brings the beer garden, but don’t fool anyone. Nice and tidy castle, not big, but worth a walk. There is no separate exhibition, you can go up to the castle tower (it is now closed unfortunately due to COVID). Pleasant place and great view of the city from the road, there are several viewpoints on the road. Not far from the city center, a pleasant walk. There is also a separate footpath, it is a bit adventurous, you have to pay attention because it is not everywhere a sign of exactly where to go. There is a public toilet in the castle.

Beautiful, just a little pricey since it's in a tourist area

We like to eat here from time to time. Exquisite selection, delicious cuisine, some things a little more expensive but qualitatively very appealing. The restaurant is always a stunner in winter, when you finally reach the top after a walk in the snow and enter the restaurant, you really feel like you are stuck in a medieval castle. A reservation is advisable. In summer we sit outside and enjoy the beautiful castle courtyard.

Very nice staff, calm place and an awesome view from the tower. Hiked up from the city via the Rübezahlweg... worth a hike and worth a stay! Looking forward to summer to test the beer garden:)

Wonderful views and an impressive place. Get ready for lots of stairs if you visit the top of the tower. Restaurant was also very nice, staff attentive and food was excellent.

A place worthy of a photo shoot or at least a walk. Very romantic here. You can climb the tower for a small amount. Beautiful view of the surroundings, and there is a restaurant if you want to eat.

A beautiful castle! ... Can be booked with a guide or on Sundays at 14.30 ... Unfortunately, we did not find out until later. But even so it is worth a visit ... you can climb on the tower and visit Bamberg from above ... and a restaurant is also available at the castle ;-)

Entire Bamberg at the palm of your hand. 1 euro entrance to the tower since maintenance is mostly volunteer based. I paid with delight because view is more than worth it.

You need to walk on foot, from the center all the time up the hill for about 20 minutes, but when you get there - beauty. The local bus, which costs 9 euros, will take you from the foot to the castle for 2 minutes, just as much by walking the stairs, free and cool. There is an excellent cafe inside and almost no one in the castle, you can find it all in 5 minutes inside, but this is a very cozy and peaceful place. Cool house someone was. Back down the hill to the center 15 minutes.

Amazing trip up to this castle. You cannot see it from below and I didn't really even know it was up there except for the location on Google maps. There is a trail up the hill with a few meters with no sidewalk up a steep hill. Once you get there you're welcome with stunning views of Bamberg. Beer garden with food is your prize! Includes a rather large assortment of beer options compared to other local establishments. It costs 1 € to climb the tower, but other than that it's free!

Love the castle, the visit brought back many memories from my childhood. A must when you are in Bamberg!

Do not miss this place when visiting Bamberg. It is a beautiful view of the whole city. Free entry. The entrance is only to the van and it is 1 euro and the box is at the entrance. It is up to you whether you are honest and pay this symbolic amount. You can get to the parking lot below the castle, or you can get here from the city small train.

Decent place to free yourself from stress

Always worth a visit - awesome views and a nice walk through the woods to get there. Also, the castle was very well renovated and it has a decent Gasthaus.

It used to have the famous Poldi bear that a lot of older locals remember. It's a really nice castle to visit, small but very nice.

Visited today. Only 1 restaurant, very sad, no variety on food. No easy way to go, must have personal vehicle or walk 1100 meters from the nearest bus stop. Not for unhealthy people to climb such mountainous zigzag path. Bus 908. Could have been a better tourist spot. (Feb 2019 review)
